James Turrell
James Turrell is one of the most renowned representatives of the international art scene, dedicating his entire oeuvre to exploring the diverse manifestations of natural and artificial light. He creates immersive installations and environments in which he manipulates light, thereby evoking profound sensory experiences.
With the “Curved Wide Glasses”, James Turrell has created a series of spectacular works that provide a unique visual experience of light in a regular architectural setting. The unique work ‘Reining the Light’ is individually programmed with state-of-the-art LED technology and creates a mesmerising experience previously reserved for the artist’s larger installations.
When viewing this impressive play of light, the two-dimensional plane is transformed into an indefinable depth in which the eye can easily lose itself. As is characteristic of James Turrell’s work, these pieces not only inspire, but also challenge our perception of light and space.
The colour gradient is reminiscent of an animated atmospheric painting in which the colours flow from the centre to the edges. At times, a single shade of blue, green or purple floods the plane before literally imploding into another colour. A new aura-like surface is created and radiates outwards in various shades as the process begins anew.
The physical structure of the Curved Wide Glass ‘Reining the Light’ refers to James Turrell’s series of ‘Shallow Space Constructions’ from the late 1960s and early 1970s. With these works, Turrell continues his exploration of technological possibilities in connection with sensory practices and invites us viewers to a meditative experience.
